in 1987 the Italian economy overtook that of the British in an event dubbed “Il Sorpasso”. Wild celebrations where seen on the streets of Rome as the once mighty UK was humbled by the other perennially sick men of Europe. Now it’s happened again, with Britain slipping to seventh in the GDP tables behind Italy. Yes, behind Italy. A country that in the year 2000 had a GDP at only 65% of the UK’s. This is a shaming, humiliating, bewildering and shocking fact. Jeez, they were even half thinking of throwing Italy out of the Eurozone for being so rubbish.
