An original design for the Albert Memorial. In the end they went with the one we know and, well, know on Kensington Gore, but how cool would this Gothic monstrosity have been, rearing up over Westminster like some insane steampunk spaceship? Lost projects like this are so fascinating. One of my all time favourite books is Unbuilt Oxford, a book that details all the college plans that never came to fruition. Collectively it forms some phantom, fantasy Oxford, grander and more wild than the real thing. When they produced The Golden Compass they should have just copied the designs wholesale.
